Since 1860, The Open has been played over some of the world\u2019s most cherished links courses and has produced a remarkable legacy of great champions. It is the oldest and most international championship in professional golf and the Claret Jug \u2013 first presented in 1873 \u2013 is one of the most iconic trophies in all of sport.\nThree of the current nine Open venues are located in the North West of England, and two in Liverpool City Region (Royal Liverpool at Hoylake and Royal Birkdale in Southport). The event is held in the NWE region on average three times a decade.\nThe R\u0026A (Open Golf organisers) have announced that the 156th Open will take place at Royal Birkdale between 12th July and 19th July 2026.\nSefton last hosted the Open Golf Championship in July 2017, also at Royal Birkdale. The Open\u2019s organisers, the Royal \u0026 Ancient (R\u0026A), reported that c235,000 people attended the event which generated approximately \u00a321 million for the Sefton economy and a further \u00a335m for the City Region. Furthermore, the total media value for the event was \u00a350m.",
